Director, Strategic Planning Developments
A strategic, visionary leader will see this role as a vital means to supporting the Planning Vision of this fast-growing city by building constructive relationships, coaching and motivating staff, and seeking and maximizing investment opportunities.
Brampton is a city focused on the future. Serving one of the youngest, fastest growing and most diverse urban centres in Canada, the Corporation of the City of Brampton is aiming high and thinking big, to position itself as an emergent global city of the future. City leaders understand that success requires passion, creativity and agility. As a result of Brampton’s strategic location along the super innovation corridor, close proximity to Pearson International Airport, and 7 Million people within a 45 minute drive, the city is ideally positioned for significant investment. The organization values progress and innovation over process. And staff members hold each other accountable. Brampton is a team that is engaged, excited and empowered to deliver results. If you share Brampton’s vision of the future, this is where you want to be as Director, Strategic Planning Developments.
Reporting to the Commissioner, Planning and Development Services, you will provide focused leadership and represent the strategic initiatives of the Department, including accountability for leading key planning issues that require dynamic collaborations that will drive new partnerships and community engagements for the City of Brampton. Your work will result in compelling invitations to attract investments for regional destinations and economic development in the city. You are a proven leader and negotiator, responsible for internal- and external‑facing initiatives that enhance the capacity of the Planning function, improve service levels or elevate the impact of Planning as it relates to achieving the Planning Vision of the City, and seek private investing opportunities that contribute to achieving organizational goals.
Your strategic vision, relationship management and public relations skills and in‑depth knowledge of land development laws in Ontario will enable you to develop a strategy for the development of City-owned property, attract investors and generate wealth for Brampton through the oversight of key land development projects. You will be responsible to construct and negotiate progressive deals that leverage private and public sector funds to help realize the planning vision. As Director of Strategic Planning Developments, you will put to work your 7 to 10 years as a leader to guide and motivate team direction to focus on strategic goals and objectives that lead to strong City building and improved efficiencies.
A strong presenter and communicator, able to convey concepts in a clear, concise manner, you’re ready to act as liaison between the private sector and City of Brampton staff and Council, as well as interface with a wide range of internal and external key stakeholders: community groups, government agencies, public and private sector organizations, private investors, the public and the media. The City will count on you to build and foster strong working relationships and collaborative arrangements with all interested parties towards meeting Planning Vision goals and objectives.
You will hold a bachelor’s degree in Planning, Finance, Business or a related field combined with 10 years’ progressive experience in major land development transactions within the public or private sector. You are comfortable working with senior-level executives, enabling you to capably represent the Division at Council, Committee and Senior Management Team meetings and provide expert consultative advice to influence decision-making that impact positive outcomes.
This mandate calls for a track record of success in working collaboratively within a team environment to achieve goals and objectives while respecting diverse cultural backgrounds and perspectives, and in developing and implementing multi-faceted strategies for diverse stakeholders with wide-ranging impacts. Expert knowledge of municipal, regional, provincial and federal governments, and applicable legislation is expected. An awareness of current social, economic and political priorities would be an asset.
